Unpleasant odors on the KNS are a thing of the past

21.01.2021 10:32

Over the last 20 years, water consumption and, consequently, wastewater in Kyiv has decreased by almost 2.5 times. As a result, sewage waters are becoming increasingly concentrated, and unpleasant odors on the sewage systems, particularly on sewage pumping stations (SPS), have been increasing. But now, the problem of unpleasant odors will gradually be solved!

«Voskresenska» - the first SPS where a system of ozone ventilation has been implemented

One of the most problematic SPS in Kyiv in this regard is «Voskresenska». It is one of the largest sewage pumping stations of Kyivvodokanal, serving the water disposal of Troieshchyna, Vygurivschyna, Voskresenska, Lysovyi, and Zazymie village. The spread of odors is significantly amplified here due to the presence of a liquid household waste reception point for garbage trucks.

The station is located in the territory of the «Peremoha» park and is quite close to residential buildings, so we received numerous complaints from visitors, local residents, and deputy appeals regarding the unpleasant odor in this area.

Therefore, within the framework of the 2020 Program for the repair of fixed assets, the exhaust ventilation of the settling tank was equipped with an ozone system as an experiment.

How the ozone system works

Ozone is capable of strongly oxidizing and sterilizing - it breaks down all the chemical elements characteristic of sewage water: hydrogen sulfide, methane, ammonia, etc.

On the SPS, ozone is supplied in several points. At the entrance to the receiving reservoir, the ozone concentrate, due to its greater density, spreads over the entire surface of the sewage water in the reservoir, enters into a reaction, and breaks down the unpleasant odor. Then, the air is further purified in the exhaust duct and at the exit from the settling tank.

The system is equipped with gas analyzers that control the level of ozone in the air and automatically regulate the productivity of the ozone generator depending on the incoming unpleasant odors.

European experience was taken as a basis

For the implementation of the innovative approach, we took the positive experience of the Baltic countries, with which our specialists became acquainted and convinced of its effectiveness during a trip to Lithuania in 2019 to visit the water supply and sewage facilities of the cities of Vilnius, Kaunas, Klaipeda. At that time, representatives of the sewage department also familiarized themselves in detail with the specifics of the technologies of production and application of ozone systems directly at the factory of the manufacturer: «AIR PLUS1» (Klaipeda city).

Which SPS will be next

As a result of the implementation of the ozone system on the SPS «Voskresenska», the issue of unpleasant odors around it has been completely resolved. Therefore, similar systems will be installed on other sewage pumping stations. In particular, in 2021, the technology of ozonation is planned to be introduced on the SPS «Myshylivka».

P.S. Regarding how the problem of unpleasant odors coming from the settling tank of the Bortnytska aeration station will be solved, we are preparing a separate publication. For now, we will briefly note that the solution to this problem is provided for in the project for the reconstruction of BSS.
